ELGIN, Texas -- The community of Elgin is mourning the loss of a couple deputies say was shot and killed by their own son.
Investigators say Carlos Whitcomb shot and killed Kenneth and Phyllis Payne.
Friends say they were a beautiful family, everyone knew them and loved them dearly. Now the community wants answers.
"It's a small community. That's not a bad thing. Everybody knows everyone. We can make a phone call and we have most of Elgin praying for people in different areas praying for everyone," said Ashley Edmon, parishoner at Nats Church.
Friends say 61-year-old Kenneth Payne and his 63-year-old wife Phyllis had a loving relationship. They lived in this home off Hog Eye road in Elgin.
Travis county deputies arrested the couple's son, 41-year-old Carlos Whitcomb. Deputies say he was treated at Seton Hospital after the shooting. He's now charged with murder.
According to his arrest affidavit, sheriff's deputies found "numerous" .45 caliber shell casings on the floor of the home. Both victims had "gunshot wounds to the head."
One witness saw blood and a cut on Whitcomb's face and say he was "acting very strange" and "making strange comments to the nurses."
It's still not clear exactly why the shooting happened.
We will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as the Travis County Sheriff's Office completes its investigation.
