AUSTIN -- Surrounded by his family, friends and supporters, Michael Morton attended the SXSW world premiere of the documentary based on his life, "An Unreal Dream."
Morton was wrongfully convicted in 1987 for the murder of his wife Christine.
Austin Director Al Reinert began shooting the film in 2012.
"He's a very intelligent man who spent 25 years in prison for something he didn't do," said Reinert.
The documentary shows the personal relationship and struggles between Morton and his son. Reinert interviewed inmates who knew Morton in prison, as well as the lawyers who fought for DNA testing that ultimately exonerated Morton.
Reinert says he first met Morton in prison. Morton was cautious at the time but Reinert won over his trust by reassuring him he could be part of the movie-making process.
"I promised Michael that we wouldn't screw it up," said Reinert.
There will be two other showings of the documentary in Austin:
- Wednesday 3/13 Alamo Village, 6:30 p.m.
- Saturday 3/16 Topfer Theater at Zach Scott, 4 p.m.
