For 30 years, Austin Chronicle readers have been polled to find out which performers have been the best in a variety of categories.  Just like in years past, Wednesday night's annual awards featured some surprise winners.

At most concerts, the Headliner plays last.  At Wednesday's Austin Music Awards the big winner was first to take the stage.  Quiet Company took top honors in 10 categories including "Band of the Year."

"It was really amazing," said Matt Parmenter, of Quiet Company.  "We had a little bit of an idea we may take home a couple of awards but to see 10 on there was really amazing.  There are no words.  It is really amazing.  We really are honored because we did a lot of hard work, but it was not just us.  There are people who came out of the woodwork to support us and that is what it is all about."

Carolyn Wonderland won't say how long she's been in the Austin music scene, but she does admit, "My career is old enough to drink now," she said.

Wonderland took home the award for "Best Female Vocals."

"Every time it blows your mind, but this time especially so," said Wonderland.  "To live in a town like Austin and get an award for best singer absolutely kills you. I know for a fact.  Heck! I am playing with a girl who I know is a better singer than I am tonight."

The Director of the Austin Music Awards says she can understand why Austinites have made the event a success for three decades.

"I think if you look at the lineup of the people who are performing tonight you will see that kind of breadth and depth of Austin music over the last 30 years," said Margaret Moser, who is also a senior writer at the Chronicle.  "We have tried to hit as many of the genres and the trends and the sounds that we could possibly do in 3 and a half hours."
