Metroplex neighborhood plans border fence to keep out crime

There’s a border fight in Fort Worth. Glenwood Triangle wants to close city streets and build a fence around the neighborhood in an effort to keep out criminals.

It may sound extreme, but it’s an idea the city is backing.

Dan and Jerry Hammack are tired of feeling like they live in Fort Worth’s trash bin.

Illegal dumping appears overnight.

“The stuff is just being piled on us and piled on us,” said Dan Hammack.

There are drug users and prostitutes.

And there are waves of homeless people who cut through the neighborhood.

Earlier this year, the Hammacks – who also head the Glenwood Triangle Improvement Association – started floating the idea to close two streets that lead into the more hidden, crime-ridden part of the neighborhood.

It would keep out drivers with large, locked gates and encircle much of the community with a fence.

“It’s a lot of fence, but we have to do something to stop all this,” said Hammack.

It may sound radical, but to Councilwoman Pro Tem Kathleen Hicks, it made sense.

“This is really an example of the community taking action and being proactive,” said Hicks.

An aerospace parts plant next door is taking its support one step further. The business’ president has agreed to foot part of the bill.

“I’ll be paying my people time-and-a-half to put up the fences,” said Les Cathey.

In the past decade, Fort Worth only allowed one other neighborhood to close some of its streets for protection. It was also on the Southside. Hicks said the city looks at neighborhood needs on a case-by-case basis.

“We’re not out to set a precedent. This is just a neighborhood that asked to do it. Council thought it was a good idea, and we had unanimous support,” said Hicks.

Glenwood Triangle expects to get final approval from a city fire code board this week.

However, the Hammacks are not done. They plan to begin the application process to block off two other streets.
