Galveston smoking ordinance on the table
09:48 AM CST on Tuesday, November 1, 2005
GALVESTON — The City Council will gather citizen input on a new smoking
ordinance tonight.
The council had proposed a complete ban on smoking in bars, restaurants
and other public buildings, but, with the exception of Councilwoman
Jackie Cole, the council has since indicated that the ordinance it
ultimately backs will allow smoking under some circumstances.
AP Galveston residents will be the first allowed to vocalize their opinions on a possible city smoking ordinance.
Most members now seem likely to allow smoking in stand-alone bars and
possibly in walled-off sections of restaurants.
The council will not speak at tonight’s hearing. Instead, those wishing
to give input will be given two minutes each. Galveston residents will
be allowed to speak first.
Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas last week said that an anti-smoking rally was
planned in front of City Hall, but no such demonstrations would be
allowed inside the building.
