N. Texas soldier reunites with mom battling cancer
08:18 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Many mothers of soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan live with the fear that each day might be their child's last. That is actually the same feeling one North Texas soldier has had about his mother ever since he learned she is battling cancer at home.
News 8 first reported on the soldier and his mother in April. Now, months after the last time they saw each other, the mother and son were able to reunite once again. This time, the mother had something special for her son placed on the top of her newly bald head, a temporary tattoo with USA written in blue.
It's cancer humor Cindy Stephens thought she might never get to share with her soldier son. Five months ago, Stephens learned she had stage 4 lung cancer. At the time, the military rushed Specialist Dustin Stephens home within days of hearing the news so that he could see his mother. The moment was caught on videotape.
Both wondered if that would be the last time they would see each other. But Stephens turned out to be a warrior too, surviving grueling treatment. She lived for the sweet reunion that took place over the weekend at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
"Hi beautiful," Specialist Stephens said to his mother before giving her a big kiss and hug as she greeted him at the airport.
The hug turned into a dance with her son and some happy tears from Stephens. For the mother and son, it turned out to be a dance worth fighting for.
Specialist Stephens was also welcomed back home with 600 flags placed in his front yard.
