Husband of missing soldier wanted in Tennessee

EL PASO, Texas -- A man sought for questioning in the disappearance of his soldier wife has a criminal record and is wanted in Tennessee for failing to pay child support, authorities said Sunday.
Clinton W. Lewis has not been charged in the case and police have not named him a suspect. But investigators want to talk to him about the disappearance of his wife, Pfc. Jeneesa M. Lewis, a soldier stationed at Fort Bliss.
He is wanted on an outstanding warrant from Hawkins County, Tenn., where the couple lived before Jeneesa Lewis joined the Army last year. Officials with the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office did not provide details of the warrant Sunday, saying the department would issue a statement on Monday.
According to court records from Tennessee, Clinton Lewis has a criminal history extending back several years that includes arrests for assault, theft, selling and possessing marijuana, and driving under the influence. He pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the assault and theft cases and served jail time in the drug case, records show.
Jeneesa Lewis, 29, was reported missing Friday morning after she failed to show up for work at Fort Bliss.
She is considered missing and endangered and police believe she is with her husband traveling in the soldier’s 2001 white Dodge Dakota pickup truck.
El Paso police, who continued to search for the soldier and her husband Sunday, have said only that they found signs of foul play inside the apartment.
When soldiers from Jeneesa Lewis’ unit went to check on her, they found the apartment locked and no one apparently inside. Police later found blood inside the disheveled apartment, the soldier’s sister, Tammy Skelton said Saturday.
Skelton said she fears the worst for her sister. She said Jeneesa Lewis sent text messages in the last week saying that Clinton Lewis was leaving El Paso.
“Hey sis, he’s gone so when my check comes, I’m going to buy a futon,” Jeneesa Lewis wrote in the text message Wednesday, Skelton said. “Yeah, he’s gone. Had police go with me yesterday. It’s all clear.”
But investigators believe Clinton Lewis came back to the apartment the couple once shared some time Thursday and then left with Jeneesa Lewis.
Skelton said Jeneesa Lewis joined the Army to make a new life herself and her three children without Clinton Lewis. The children have been living in Tennessee with Jeneesa Lewis’ mother since she joined the Army.
Jeneesa Lewis is the fourth female service member to disappear in recent months. A young Marine and two soldiers vanished and were later found dead in North Carolina.
