Two flown to hospital, 32 injured in Longview pileup
10:26 PM CDT on Saturday, July 19, 2008
LONGVIEW, Texas – High speeds and wet roads combined to start a chain reaction of multiple wrecks along a 300-yard stretch of Interstate 20, authorities said.
No fatalities were reported in the multiple-car pileup Friday night, but Department of Public Safety spokesman Bob Lindley said two people were flown to the hospital after the wreck.
People who were seriously injured were taken to Good Shepherd hospital in Shreveport, La. and Trinity Mother Frances hospital in Tyler, he said.
One of the victims was a little boy who suffered a cracked skull and was flown to a Tyler hospital, DPS spokeswoman Jean Dark said.
The series of accidents occurred after authorities restricted the flow of traffic to one lane along the interstate, according to news reports.
Photographs taken at the scene showed several people walking along the highway after the wreck while vehicles with smashed up front ends sat in the wet road. One young mother had to be cut out of her car after it became trapped beneath the back end of an 18-wheeler.
Witnesses said one trucker was able to walk away from his rig after it flipped over and came to a stop upside down.
Charles Akujobi told the paper he was heading home to Arlington when the heavy rain began.
"You couldn't see anything," Akujobi said. "One of the first cars lost control and it was a domino effect. I slid off the road, but luckily I missed it."
Longview is about 125 miles east of Dallas.
