Police: Drunk driver plunges off Texas City Dike
07:54 AM CDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
TEXAS CITY, Texas -- Anglers on the Texas City Dike were sent scrambling early Sunday morning when a car came smashing through their fishing spots and into Galveston Bay. The crash also had Texas City, the U.S. Coast Guard and Galveston County Sheriff’s water rescue teams searching the bay for someone who didn’t exist.
Texas City police said Gerson Gerardo Rodriguez Reyes, 25, was speeding down the five-mile long dike when he lost control. His car barreled through a group of fishermen, over the rock groins that line the dike and into the water.
People on shore went into the water and pulled the man out of his car.
When police arrived on the scene, Reyes reportedly told them that another man – whose name he did not know -- was in the car.

Texas City police called out the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office dive team to help search for the supposed missing man. The U.S. Coast Guard also sent a boat and a helicopter to help in the search.
After hours of searching, police determined that Reyes may have made the story up in an attempt to suggest someone else was driving the car. Reyes was booked into the Texas City jail on a DWI charge as well as a Filing a False Report charge.
