TABC reviewing program after complaints

03:09 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Associated Press

AUSTIN -- The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is doing an internal review and retraining officers in a program that targets public drunkenness in bars.

The move comes after an outcry from tourism officials and some legislators.

Commission spokeswoman Carolyn Beck Wednesday said undercover agents will still ticket or arrest bar patrons who seem exceedingly drunk.

But she says commission officials are taking the complaints seriously.

TABC has done stings in bars since 2001, but began doing more after getting additional funding from the Legislature.

Public intoxication is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a

fine of up to $500.

Media reports after a sting last month in Irving prompted criticism that such arrests could be bad for business.

The Texas House Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee will hold a public hearing April 17.
