Cops spring into action for spring break

Most of Texas’ high schools and colleges will be on spring break for one of the next two weeks, and revelers will be out in force on county roads.

They will not be the only ones.

Tyler Susuras, 19, front, plays guitar for friends during spring break on Crystal Beach. Thousands came to the beach for what is typically among the biggest weekends of the year for the numbers of visitors.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the county will station extra patrol officers on major traffic arteries, with those extra units on the prowl for impaired drivers.

The funding for the extra shifts comes from a Texas Department of Transportation grant in effect during holiday periods since last year, and area officials say the results have been impressive.

“Our statistics are better than last year, and our guys are doing a good job of getting out there and making arrests,” Galveston police Lt. Mike Riedel said.

Like Galveston, Santa Fe will also have extra officers working who will target speeders, under a separate grant.

“It’s a pretty simple message — watch your speed, and don’t drink and drive, or get ready to go to jail,” Santa Fe Police Chief Barry Cook said.

Galveston County sheriff’s office Maj. Eric Nevelow said deputies working under the grant would not shy from citing drivers for illegal activity, even if that activity fell outside the DWI realm.

“We will be looking for all types of violations,” Nevelow said. “We’d rather have everyone safe, but we will issue citations and arrests, where necessary.”

A violation becoming increasingly common is impaired driving not caused by any substance, but by distraction.

“We have noticed a lot of people getting pulled over for swerving on the road, but they’re not intoxicated — they’re talking on the cell phone, or even focusing on eating a sandwich,” Riedel said. “What they should be doing is focusing on their driving.”
