Police shoot, kill man firing gun in Texas City parking lot

TEXAS CITY, Texas – Officers shot and killed a man who was firing a gun in a Texas City parking lot early Friday morning, police said.

Police said they were called to HT's Lounge on FM 1765 at Crockett Street around 1:20 a.m. Friday. Upon arriving, an officer called for backup after seeing the suspect shooting toward people exiting the lounge.

Authorities say the officer told the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect instead turned and aimed the weapon at the officer. The officer opened fire, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the shooting, a crowd gathered and reportedly started throwing rocks at the officers. Other nearby agencies responded to provide back-up.

Some witnesses complained that a nurse on the scene was not allowed to help the man after police shot him.

The suspect's name and the name of the officer involved will be released within 48 hours per department policy. They are also reviewing dash camera and surveillance video.

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation.
