Former officer indicted for allegedly revealing investigation

AUSTIN - A former Temple police officer has been indicted on charges he allegedly revealed an ongoing investigation.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Erick French, 24, was arrested Thursday by FBI agents. The indictment unsealed alleges he provided false information to FBI agents on two occasions in March. French allegedly hid the fact he had sent a text message alerting an individual to an ongoing investigation by Temple Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit.

French made his initial court appearance Thursday morning in Waco and was released after posting $25,000 bond. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said his arraignment is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 19 in Austin.

“San Antonio FBI would like to thank DEA and Temple Police Department for their extraordinary contributions in this joint investigation. By identifying and bringing this matter to the FBI's attention, the Temple Police Department has demonstrated high standards for integrity and accountability within its department,” stated FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs.

French was suspended indefinitely on July 29 for violations related to this misconduct. The FBI returned an indictment on French on September 8.

If French is convicted, each false statement charges carries a sentence of up to five years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
