Suspected smugglers arrested after 52 rescued from stash house

EDINBURG, TEXAS - Border Patrol agents arrested five smugglers Wednesday after receiving information regarding a stash house with more than 50 undocumented immigrants inside.

Agents worked with officers from the Edinburg Police Department, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and Hidalgo County Constables Office Pct. 4 to locate the residence in Edinburg. A release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection states law enforcement obtained consent to search the residence “after observing suspicious activity” there, and located 57 people inside. Five of those people were identified as smugglers.

The 52 undocumented immigrants are from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, CBP said. All were taken to the Weslaco Border Patrol Station and processed accordingly. The five smugglers were referred to the Rio Grande Valley Sector Prosecutions Office. CBP did not release the names of the five smugglers.
