Crews searching for missing diabetic, last seen kayaking

Kayaking up and down Cypress Creek had become a weekend tradition. But Saturday night, a split second changed everything.

"He was sitting with his head out of the water," said Terri Conner, choking back tears. "His kayak was upside down. I tried to reach him with my paddle, but I couldn't, I couldn't get him out."

Conner was in her own kayak next to her husband Brian when she says his capsized. She thinks he had a diabetic episode out on the water. Unable to reach him, she paddled to shore and called 9-1-1. By the time she and emergency crews returned, they saw his overturned canoe and his life vest floating in the water. But no sign of Brian.

"It's pretty urgent that we find him as quick as we can," said Capt. Wally Wieghat, with the Precinct 4 Constable's Office.

The overnight search on Saturday stretched into Sunday. Harris County's airboat searched on water, Texas Equusearch volunteers walked up and down the creek's banks for several miles. And even brought in a special boat to aid with the search.

"A smaller boat with side scan radar that should give us a better view of what's at the bottom of the creek," said Wieghat.

His wife hasn't stopped searching either.

"I got here this morning at 6 o'clock and went out by myself, and found one shoe, that's it," said Conner.

Fueling the concern even more, the fact that Brian is a type 1 diabetic. He needs insulin and time is ticking away.

"That's his livelihood and he doesn't have his insulin," said Conner. "He doesn't have food, nothing, he doesn't have water."

Slow moving water has kept the creek relatively calm, but with ominous rain clouds lurking above and more rain expected, the search get even trickier.

"When that water hits the creek, it's going to rise rapidly," said Wieghat. "It's going to be a fast moving creek. But we're going to maintain an active, aggressive search until we locate him."
