SPLENDORA, Texas – One man was killed while attempting to zip-line across a Splendora lake Tuesday.
Police said around 3:30 p.m., several young adults were at a swimming hole at the end of Midline Road. The one-acre lake has a zip-cable running across it, which is attached to trees at both ends.
Kevin Burgess, 23, climbed the trees to get the handles for the cables, which are 30 feet off the ground. As he started off to the other side, the cable malfunctioned. It began to hang, jarring him loose. Burgess then plunged almost head-first to the ground, according to witnesses.
Police said friends loaded Burgess, who sustained severe head injuries, into the back of an SUV and headed for help. They called EMS when they reached the intersection of Highway 59 at Fostoria. EMS arrived to the scene around 4 p.m., where they pronounced Burgess dead.
An autopsy will be performed at the Southeast Forensic Center in Conroe.
