HOUSTON – Police have identified two suspects who allegedly carjacked a man at a Red Box movie kiosk outside of a north Houston McDonald’s on Tuesday. The victim turned the tables on the suspects, however, killing one of them.
It all happened at the restaurant located in the 7500 block of the North Freeway around 9:25 p.m.
According to Houston police, a man was using the DVD kiosk when he was approached by Melvin Frederick Austin and Elijah Alexander Mims, who were both carrying guns. A third suspect was in a 1999 dark green Honda Civic.
Austin and Mims demanded the man’s keys and cell phone, then got into his vehicle to drive off. But as they turned to back away, the victim pulled out his own weapon and opened fire, shooting through the driver’s side window and front windshield. He was a concealed handgun license owner.
Both suspects were hit. Austin, 25, died at the scene. Mims, 32, managed to hop out and flee on foot. He was picked up by the getaway driver in the Honda Civic, then dropped off at a hospital in College Station. That is where police found him.
The green Honda was also recovered, but the third suspect remains on the loose.
Anyone with information about the third suspect’s identity or whereabouts is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 712-22-TIPS.
