AUSTIN -- The race for Texas House speaker has taken a new turn.
Republican David Simpson of Longview filed papers Monday morning challenging incumbent Speaker Joe Straus.
Another Northeast Texas Republican, Bryan Hughes, announced he's dropping out of the race for speaker. He pledged his support to Simpson Monday.
Although a staunch conservative, Simpson has criticized Straus for not working enough with House Democrats.
