HOUSTON –- Police said a late night scuffle that turned into a deadly shooting may be a case of self-defense.
According to the Houston Police Department, it was around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday when officers were called to a unit at the Cherry Creek Apartments on Hollister at Tidwell. They found a man in his early 20s with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was sent to the hospital where he later died.
A subsequent investigation revealed the shooter was the apartment’s renter. Police said the renter was allowing the shooting victim to stay with him temporarily.
A scuffle ensued when the victim allegedly tried to choke the renter’s dog. The pair then started fighting, and, fearing for his safety, the renter said he opened fire.
Homicide detectives were looking at the shooting as a possible case of self-defense, but they said they still had a lot of fact gathering to do before handing it over to the district attorney.
In the meantime, the shooter was taken into custody.
