BELTON, Texas (AP) -- A driver convicted of murder in the deaths of two of his passengers in a crash while fleeing from Killeen police has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The Killeen Daily Herald reports a jury Thursday sentenced 23-year-old John Beasley Jr. of North Carolina. He was convicted Wednesday in the deaths of 39-year-old Tamojeane Tambakis of Killeen and 33-year-old James Carl Broland of New York. Beasley faced up to life in prison.

The sport utility vehicle Beasley was driving crashed into a utility pole during the chase last April. Prosecutors said a third passenger was left with a traumatic brain injury.

Investigators said Beasley's blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit for driving.

Police were looking for the SUV after a store worker reported suspicious customers.
