HOUSTON, Texas -- It was a record auction for personalized license plates at the Houston Auto Show Friday night.
Buyers were bidding on coveted messages on the plates.
"Rockets" ended up selling for $16,050.
But the most sought-after vanity plate was “Houston.” It sold for $25,000 to a local car dealer.
"I'm born and raised here in the City of Houston for 35 years,” said Chris Gillman. “I'm a sixth generation Texan… my family and I’ve been doing business here in Houston now since 1938, and this is a pretty special moment for me in my life.”
Some of the money raised at Friday’s auction will go to the state of Texas. Some of it also goes to charity.
