HOUSTON –- Police said early Friday a standoff was underway at an apartment complex in northwest Houston.

The SWAT scene started shortly before 1 a.m. Friday. Around 7 a.m. the man let his girlfriend go, but police continued to try and convince the suspect to leave his apartment.

The scene is located at a complex in northwest Houston on Deep Forest Circle at W. Tidwell Road.

A cousin of the girlfriend who was taken hostage told KVUE's sister station KHOU 11 News the man is armed with a machete and has knives in his home.

Family said a disturbance escalated during an overnight gathering at the apartment, and everyone made it out except for the girlfriend. Family members said they spoke with the woman by cell phone as she was taken hostage. She apparently was not harmed.

A Houston Police Department SWAT team was stationed outside the home, and they set up a communication device to try and talk with the suspect.

Family members said they were concerned because the suspect has a history of violence.
