AUSTIN -- Five months have passed since an Austin officer shot and killed Larry Jackson, Jr. outside a bank in Central Austin.

A rally was held Saturday to demand legal action. Jackson's family wants an indictment against Detective Charles Kleinert. Kleinert retired in October.

Several dozen people with The People's Task Force joined Jackson's family on Saturday outside the Travis County Attorney's Office. They were equipped with signs and calling for harsher punishment for Detective Kleinert.

On July 26, Jackson approached the locked doors of a bank that had been robbed hours earlier. Police say Detective Kleinert tried to speak with Jackson, and then chased him to a spot under the Shoal Creek Bridge.

After a short struggle, the detective shot and killed Jackson. Jackson was not armed.

The family is asking the county attorney to indict the detective and in their words, "to put principles before politics."

APD had no comment at this time.
