HOUSTON—The Houston SPCA Cruelty Investigation Team removed 61 purebred huskies, golden retrievers and German shepherds at the request of their owner Thursday in Waller County.

The owner is a breeder who sold the dogs to earn a living, but he became overwhelmed with the cost of the animals’ vaccinations and medical care due to the struggling economy.

He contacted the Houston SPCA and made the decision to relinquish the dogs to the organization when the two came to an agreement that this would be the best way to rehabilitate and find homes for the dogs.

The Houston SPCA Veterinary Team will be conducting medical evaluations on all of the canines to determine their overall health.

In addition, the SPCA’s animal behavior team will evaluate each dog to ensure proper placement decisions.

The dogs’ pictures will be posted at www.houstonspca.org as soon as they are available for adoption.
