BALCH SPRINGS — A two-alarm fire destroyed a gym at the Greater Apostolic Tabernacle Church in Balch Springs Friday morning.

The fire began at around 4 a.m. and the gym — which is located in a separate building from the sanctuary of the church at 3601 South Peachtree Road — was heavily damaged by smoke and flames inside.

"I believe God is in control," said Pastor Andrew Elms. "The Bible says He works all things to our good, and I just trust that He knows what's best. He knew it was coming, so we just go with the flow and trust Him and know He'll take care of it."

Another pastor renting out part of the church facility originally reported the fire. The cause of the blaze is unknown, and is under investigation.

The church was going to hold vacation bible school in the gym next week, and Pastor Elms said that will likely have to be canceled. He said they do plan to rebuild.

"We're going to rebuild, and everything is going to be fine," he said. "[The] Lord's got it under control and everything's going to be alright."

Dallas and Mesquite fire departments assisted the Balch Springs Fire Department, and they had the blaze contained by 6:30 a.m.
