HARRIS COUNTY — Something as routine as pumping air in a tire became a life lesson to a woman who somehow survived the bizarre accident that killed her husband.

“Anyone can be taken away in the blink of an eye,” said Mon’Chelle Garley, as she sat in a living room a few days after being released from a local hospital. Garley was driving her husband, Charles, home last Tuesday when she pulled into a Shell gasoline station to get air in her tire.

“He came up to the driver side window and asked me which tire was low,” she continued.

"When I hear tires screeching, I definitely remember my husband saying, ‘Oh my God.’ A split second later, I felt the impact.”

She was knocked unconscious but came to moments later.

“And I saw my husband lying on the ground. And I just kept screaming, 'Call 911. Someone please call 911.'”

Her husband was gone before paramedics arrived.

“I was so hurt and injured that I couldn’t bend down and touch him. I couldn’t touch his hand. I couldn’t touch his face.” Investigators said the teenage driver of the pickup was speeding on the Highway 59 service road when he lost control, veering into the gas station parking lot.

So far, no charges have been filed.

“I forgive you,” said Garley. “I forgive you because I have to move on.”

She knows it won’t be easy without her husband.

“I not only lost my husband. I lost my best friend.”

A fund is being established to assist with funeral costs. To send donations, please contact Mon'Chelle Garley at 832-805-6244.
