SAN ANTONIO - At least two passengers died when a Mexican tour bus crashed Tuesday morning on Interstate 37 in Atascosa County, which is located about 33 miles south of San Antonio.
The bus was carrying 35 passengers, including the driver. Two passengers died in the crash and at least seven other passengers were being taken to San Antonio hospitals in critical condition. Three AirLIFE helicopters took patients from the scene.
The bus was headed from San Antonio to Matamoros, Mexico at about 10 a.m. when the driver lost control of the bus, which veered off the interstate and into the median, toppling over.
Witnesses said some passengers were ejected and others pinned. Many passengers escaped from the bus by crawling through windows, witnesses said.
While a blown tire was initially though to have been a possible cause, all the tires on the bus were intact.
A passenger said the hour-long trip on the bus was very bumpy before the crash. The source of that bumpiness felt like it was coming from the rear of the bus, the passenger said.
As of noon, injured passengers could still be seen at the scene. Crews were working to prioritize who of those were in most need of medical attention.
