HOUSTON -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker has been sworn in for a third two-year term.
In ceremonies Thursday, Parker says street and draining improvements made during her previous four years in office soon will become more visible.
She's also calling for more hurricane protection and passage of what the Houston Chronicle described as a comprehensive nondiscrimination ordinance that includes sexual orientation and gender identity.
She asked the audience attending the ceremony to join her in creating the future of Houston.
Sixteen members of the Houston City Council also have been sworn in. Six of them are new.
Parker is term limited from seeking another run for the chief executive's office in Texas' largest city.
