HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- Investigators said a good Samaritan who tried to break up a holdup Monday night wound up getting shot in the process.
The incident happened around 7:40 p.m. at a Valero gas station in the 700 block of Normandy Road in East Harris County.
Authorities said the suspect climbed behind the counter and placed a gun to the clerk’s head demanding money.
That’s when a male customer intervened and tried to wrestle the weapon away.
The gun went off striking the customer. Then the suspect ran away.
The victim was taken to Ben Taub Hospital. Authorities said he was expected to survive his injuries.
The male suspect was still on the run.
Witnesses who were inside the store when it happened believed someone could have easily gotten killed.
“I just got on the floor,” said a customer named Dominique. “My first instinct was to run but I thought if I ran he’d probably just shoot.”
“I was surprised because my sister was inside,” said Sixto Ruiz who was pumping gas at the time. “It was pretty dangerous for her.”
