SAN ANTONIO -- A new scam is reportedly being used to con people out of money. The scammers are targeting Texans who frequent dating websites, and they're using the military as a cover up.
Sgt. William Gonzales, a U.S. Army recruiter, said he has received several phone calls from flustered victims. The callers complain that a scam artists -- pretending to be in the military -- ask for money to help bring soldiers serving overseas back home.
Gonzalez believes the scam works because people tend to trust "someone in uniform."
Asking questions about a person's military history is a good way to see if the person is being truthful about their association, according to Gonzalez.
Anyone who has fallen victim to a similar scam should contact the nearest military office.
