SAN ANTONIO -- A 911 hangup call prompted police to investigate a northwest-side hotel room where five small and neglected children were left unattended on Wednesday morning.

The call was apparently made by one of the children, ranging in age from 9 months to 6 years old, San Antonio police said.

“We’ll talk to the older children as much as we can and try to get as much information as we can,” said Mary Walker, a spokesperson for Child Protective Services.

CPS has launched an investigation after police arrested Elizabeth Ruth Medina, 29, for child abandonment.

Medina had finally returned to the scene in the 9400 block of Wurzbach more than an hour after her late-night shopping trip.

Detectives said her children were infected with scabies, a parasitic skin condition, and the youngest had to be hospitalized due to neglect.

“We want to make sure the children are OK,” Walker said.

CPS is now looking for relatives of the children to take temporary custody of them while their mother navigates her legal troubles.

KENS 5 has learned Medina has been in trouble for child endangerment before -- back in 2006, when she received deferred adjudication and probation.
