SAN ANTONIO -- Officials say a soldier who shot a fellow service member at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio has surrendered and is in military custody.

A base spokesman said the gunman gave up to San Antonio police Monday afternoon. The victim is in stable condition.

According to KVUE's sister station, KENS 5, officers were seen combing the surrounding area in search of the suspect in the attack, and a man was captured and placed in the back of a police cruiser at about 3:45 p.m.

Officials say people reported shots being fired around 3 p.m.

Authorities locked down the base, but reopened it two hours later.

The helicopter of KVUE's sister station KENS 5 was on the scene by about 3:15 p.m. and broadcast images of one victim being rolled on a stretcher to an ambulance.

The victim, a female, was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center, which is alson on the post. There was no word on the victim's condition.

Spokesman Brent Boller said the shooting took place at the Army Medical Department Center and School on the post. He did not know the nature of the incident or the motive of the shooter.

The base includes the U.S. Army's top hospital and the headquarters for its North America Command.    Fort Sam Houston is one of the oldest U.S. military bases still in operation.
