SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Police Department was working overtime to keep the streets safe and free of drunk drivers on New Year's Eve.

"We want the public to know that we are out there," officer Matthew Porter said. "If you are caught intoxicated behind the wheel of a car, you will go to jail."

According to a KENS 5 report, San Antonio police arrested about 5,300 people for driving while intoxicated in 2011. For 2012, that number was up to nearly 6,300.

Bexar County's "no refusal" policy was implemented in September of 2011.

"We will have our traffic unit, our DWI unit and we hired officers on overtime in the DWI STEP program, which is a grant from the state," Porter said.

The Texas Department of Transportation website shows 1,038 Texans were killed in 2011 in crashes involving alcohol.
