DALLAS -- The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted to do away with a 45-minute extended workday Thursday night.
The extended day, which came with no pay increase, has been heavily criticized by many teachers.
The board voted 7-0 to pass trustee Carla Ranger's recommendation the district go back to the previous rule, which required a minimum workday of seven hours and 45 minutes. Trustees Bernadette Nutall and Adam Medrano were not at Thursday's meeting.
Rena Honea, president of Alliance-AFT, was moved to tears by the decision.
"[The teachers] have a history with this district. They are here for these kids," Honea said. "And they have continued - even with all the confusion and chaos that was referenced tonight - but they have heard the cries and it will be better for our students."
The change should take effect in January.
