The St. Joseph High School volleyball team from Victoria, Texas, was traveling to Austin to play Hyde Park High School early Saturday morning when the bus blew a tire, causing the bus to roll and crash in the grass along the highway.

The accident took place on U.S. Highway 183 near FM 2067 outside Gonzales.

Department of Public Safety troopers and San Antonio and Gonzales County officials were reportedly working the scene this morning.

Steve Ferguson, whose property faces the crash site, described the scene as devastating. The bus was on its left side when Ferguson and his workers rushed on their four wheelers from across the highway to help the victims.

According to Ferguson, before paramedics arrived, those who weren't seriously injured were helping some of the ones who couldn't get out.

Ferguson said the bus took out 80 feet of barbed wire.

Eighteen players and coaches were transported to nearby hospitals. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, officials said.
