SAN ANTONIO -- In an effort to save on fuel expenses, the Northside Independent School District has installed GPS tracking devices in all 375 of its non-school bus vehicles.  Most of these vehicles belong to the district’s maintenance department.

NISD spent $167,000 on the system, but school officials said it projects to save at least that amount in reduced fuel use.

Spokesman Pascual Gonzalez said the GPS devices will ensure employees are taking the shortest routes and are using the vehicles for only work-related activities.

"I think it's safe to say we had some employees that perhaps were not using their time wisely,"  Gonzalez said..

Earlier this year, NISD installed tracking devices in student identification cards at two schools in hopes of increasing attendance and thus increasing funding from the state.

The district said it has a similar objective the vehicle GPS trackers – investing in technology to save the district money.
