NBC on Wednesday announced Jimmy Fallon will replace incumbent Jay Leno at "The Tonight Show," moving the iconic franchise back to New York.

The late-night talk show, which began in the early 1950s, has had numerous names and hosts over the years, including Johnny Carson, the longest-serving host to date.

Here's a look back at some of the permanent and guest hosts since the show's inception.
