AUSTIN -- Intense training is underway in Austin for dozens of firefighters from across Texas. They're members of the elite rescue squad of Texas Task Force One.

Training is very important to help the group function together quickly in times of disaster. While the task force is based in Texas and the Lonestar state is its first priority, the unit can go anywhere across the U.S. or even the world.

The team generally comes in after local first responders are exhausted or overwhelmed and then works under the local team's directions.

On Wednesday the team is training on three stations: interior shoring, heavy lifitng or moving and patient management. The training topics are on a constant rotation.

'We try to keep an eye on and pick out what our weaknesses are. We also try to keep current on the latest and greatest with tools and techniques because who knows what we'll face out in the real world," Squad Officer Lt. Travis Maher said.

Texas Task Force One has traveled to a number of disasters in recent years including 9/11, Hurricanes Katrina & Rita, the explosion in West and the Moore, Oklahoma tornadoes.

The training will continue through Thursday. The task force will participate in several other regional trainings later in the fall.
