AUSTIN -- It had an excellent run, but the Austin Trail of Lights is over for this holiday season.
Organizers think about 60,000 people came out for opening night, and they expected 250,000 to walk the trail during the eight nights of the festival. However, Monday the Trail of Lights tweeted that more than 400,000 visitors attended the festival. An email attempting to confirm that number by the Trail of Lights has yet to be returned.
The Trail of Lights ran from Dec. 16 through Dec. 23 and just like in past years, there were numerous performances as well as food and drinks. This year the Trail of Lights also raised money for 23 Austin non-profits.
The holiday tradition displays one million lights, 50 displays, and hundreds of statues.
The Trail of Lights originated in 1965. Back then it was called Yulefest.
