AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A weekend vigil as part of 9/11 remembrances in Texas will include a salute to firefighters and their months of battling wildfires across the state.
Ceremonies planned Sunday night in Austin are sponsored by the Texas Wildfire Relief Fund. The nonprofit group is working to raise money for volunteer firefighters whose resources have been drained during the active wildfire season.
The Texas Forest Service says wildfires since November have burned more than 3.5 million acres.
Organizers say the vigil, on the south steps of the Texas Capitol, will commemorate the decade since the terrorist attacks and will salute first responders. A remnant from the fallen World Trade Center in New York City will be on display.
