AUSTIN -- Former Houston Mayor Bill White's job as a candidate takes him all across Texas; he believes Gov. Rick Perry isn't spending enough time on his job as the state's CEO.
"A chief executive officer ultimately should be responsible for making sure that the executive branch of the government performs well and that takes time,” White said on Thursday in Austin
White's campaign obtained the governor's official calendars. The campaign believes they include too much time with the media and business leaders and not enough time working with legislators and other state officials on the looming budget shortfall -- which could be as high as $18 billion dollars.
“I think it's number that somebody just reached up in the air and grabbed,” Perry told KVUE News in May.
White's campaign has latched onto that statement painting Perry as out of touch.
“I would have a very different relationship with members of the House and the Senate than to accuse respected legislators of pulling numbers out of thin air,” White said.
The schedules released by the White campaign also show meetings with House Speaker Joe Straus and Comptroller Susan Combs.
