AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Military veterans who are totally disabled would get some help with their property tax bills under legislation approved by the Texas House.
Under the bill, approved Wednesday, disabled veterans could get a generous residential homestead property exemption even if they moved into the home after Jan. 1. Now disabled veterans can only get the tax break if they are counted as having lived in the home for a whole calendar year, according to a House analysis of the provision.
The legislation lawmakers approved would allow the tax break, which applies to the total value of the property, would begin to kick in the moment the disabled veteran moved in. It ties the break to the individual, not the house. The Senate has a different version of the bill.
