Houston Mayor Bill White is no stranger to the Alamo City. He grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Churchill High School.

On Monday, as White kicked off the first week of his gubernatorial campaign, he returned to South Texas to bring together his new supporters. At the Santa Anna ballroom downtown, White was backed by several big name supporters, including former state Senator Joe Bernal.

On the podium, White touted his experience as Houston mayor, particularly after Hurricane Katrina, when thousands of displaced citizens took refuge in Texas. White's an attorney who's served as mayor of Houston since 2003.

In March, he'll faces hair care executive Farouk Shami, teacher Felix Alvarado and possibly comedian Kinky Friedman in the democratic primary.

But many believe that after Monday's big show of support for White, Friedman may decide to drop out of the race.
