HOUSTON (AP) — Former Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia and fellow Democrat and state Rep. Carol Alvarado are headed to a runoff election to fill the seat of late Sen. Mario Gallegos.

Gallegos, a Houston Democrat, died of liver disease in October. It was too late to remove his name from the November election ballot and he was posthumously elected to another term.

According to unofficial results in Saturday's voting, Garcia won slightly more than 45 percent of the vote, nearly four percentage points above Alvarado, who had been endorsed by Gallegos' family. But neither captured a majority in an eight-candidate field.

Republican R.W. Bray, the candidate Gallegos defeated in November, was third with around 6 percent.

It now will be up to Gov. Rick Perry to set a date for the runoff.
