WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department is warning American travelers to take extra precautions overseas amid concerns of a possible terrorist attack by al-Qaida.

The warning notes that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats. The warning extends through the end of the month.

The State Department also has closed down 21 embassies and consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend.
