WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Thursday called a mass shooting at a Texas Army base "a horrific outburst of violence."

"We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident," the commander in chief said. "We are going to stay on this."

He said it’s a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

The Army says 12 people were killed and more than 30 wounded at the Army base at Fort Hood, Texas.

Obama also said his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and families of the fallen.

Both U.S. Senators from Texas issued statements denouncing the mass shooting.

"I am shocked and saddened by today’s outburst of violence at Fort Hood that has cost [12] of our brave service members their lives and has gravely injured others," U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said. "Our dedicated military personnel have sacrificed so much in service to our country, and it sickens me that the men and women of Fort Hood have been subjected to this senseless, random violence. I know all Americans share this concern for the soldiers and their families who are affected by this tragedy."

"My heart goes out to the victims of the tragedy that occurred today at Fort Hood, as well as their families," said U.S. Senator John Cornyn in a written statement. "Fort Hood is one of our nation’s finest and largest military installations, and a place that has long been a source of pride for Texans, and for all Americans who value the selfless service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.
