NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge has rejected a multimillion-dollar legal settlement for people sickened by dust from the World Trade Center.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein said in court Friday that the deal to compensate 10,000 police officers, firefighters and other laborers didn't include enough money for the workers.

He also said he was concerned that too much of the deal was eaten up by legal fees.

The settlement proposal would have given the workers $575 million to $657 million.

Hellerstein ripped into the agreement after hearing several ground zero responders speak of their illnesses.
