FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Before this flood season, Fargo, N.D., officials asked homeowners to clear paths in their yards so walls of sandbags could be placed to protect their homes.

One resident cut down his tree, and another used a torch to melt ice off his ground.

Last year, Fargo wasn't so prepared. Homeowners put sandbags on snow, and water seeped underneath. Other barriers toppled over, allowing floodwaters to rush into homes.

Fargo is well versed in flood preparation because it's learned from its mistakes. As a result, many here feel they've already won the flood fight even though the Red River isn't expected to crest until Sunday.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker (WAH'-lah-kehr) said Thursday that while preparations are going well, it's probably "premature to be too euphoric."
