NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are climbing in early trading as hopes grow the European Union will help Greece with its growing debt burden.

European markets rose in afternoon trading Tuesday.

Stocks have been tumbling in recent weeks — the Dow Jones industrial average closed Monday below 10,000 for the first time in three months — on concerns that debt problems in Greece, Portugal and Spain will spread to larger countries and upend a global economic recovery.

EU officials meet Thursday. It is expected they will address the debt problems.

The Dow is up 105.73, or 1.1 percent, at 10,014.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 11.85, or 1.1 percent, at 1,068.59, while the Nasdaq composite index is up 27.49, or 1.3 percent, at 2,153.54.
