UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — More than 2,000 people have signed a petition asking Hofstra University to beef up off-campus security following the killing of a student.

Andrea Rebello, a Hofstra junior, was accidentally shot by a police officer during a May 17 home invasion. The intruder, a prison parolee, was also killed.

The petition was launched by a former Hofstra homecoming king and queen. It demands that Hofstra increase security in areas neighboring the campus, especially at night.

Hofstra's president issued a statement Wednesday saying security workers already patrol the neighborhood. He says they have no jurisdiction off campus but cooperate with the county and village police who do.

Newsday reported Wednesday that the parolee killed with Rebello won praise from a state parole panel in 2011 before his conditional release from prison.
